While any form of stretch marks is an unwelcome sight, they are especially pronounced on women (and men) who have dark skin.  This becomes a higher challenge for black and African American women due to skin tone.

Why are stretch marks more noticeable for black women

The epidermis (upper layer of the skin) contains much of the melonin that contains coloring.  This is where you will find freckles on lighter skin tones and where you find darker tones of African, Asian and Hispanic descent.

When stretch marks occur, they most often begin with tearing of underlying tissue - the scond and third layers of the skin - as well as ripping of connective tissue of elastin and collagen.

As the scarring widens and elongates, the epidermis begins to separate like a crack widening in the road.  This exposes the sub-dermal layers which lack pigment.  As such and for the time a new upper layer has developed, these scars from stretch marks will be lighter than surrounding tissue, making them more visible.

How can Black women prevent scars of Stretch Marks?

There are several options available.  One, covering up the marks or two, fading and in the best case preventing the stretch marks from occurring.

Prevention

A skin care manufacturer, we have seen several products that work well - many you may be familiar with - StriVectin, Balmers, and StriMedix-SM being the most popular and cost effective stretch mark creams.

While these products are very good at healing and treating stretch marks, the best tactic and care is prevention.  If you are on a weight loss or fitness program or know you are pregnant, the use of a stretch marks cream is a great preventative program and many women findthey can avoid scarring altogether.

Treatment & Repair

In terms of fading or repair, time is king (or queen in this case).  Repair of scars takes time.  You must allow for the ingredients to soak into the second and third layers of the skin and replenish moisture and to encourage healthy skin cell development.  As newer cells are formed, they can rplace malformed tissue equalizing the tone and texture.
