Perimenopause Insomnia 101 - What You Need To Know To Get A Good Nights Rest During Perimenopause
If you are feeling depressed or anxious or you are suffering from night sweats, it can become difficult to get to sleep, and common to wake early in the morning. Eventually a good nights rest will seem like nothing more than a sweet dream and you will begin to feel beaten down by the effects of perimenopausal insomnia.
Laboratory studies have shown that women who have normal levels of estrogen fall asleep faster than women who don’t. Women who have adequate levels of estrogen also spend more time in the deepest stage of sleep, and they feel more refreshed when they awake. Dreaming seems to be particularly important for the feeling of rest and renewal that comes from sleeping. Without estrogen, we can sleep for a whole night but still feel tired when we wake.
Self Help
• In order to sleep undisturbed, you first priority should be to take control of your night sweats.
• Take a long walk or get some other form of aerobic exercise approximately one hour before bedtime, and the quality of your sleep should improve.
• Believe it or not, warm milk does work for many who suffer the effects of insomnia. This may be due to the effect calcium has on the nerves.
Medical Treatment
• Before deciding on an appropriate medication, you and your doctor should make a correct diagnosis of your insomnia. If perimenopausal symptoms such as night sweats or anxiety are preventing you from getting a good nights rest, HRT should provide the cure. If your sleeplessness is caused by a medical complaint or emotional problem unrelated to perimenopause, you may be prescribed sleeping pills.
