Blocked Fallopian Tubes – Part 1
Many people want to understand what causes blocked fallopian tubes. However, before we jump right in you need to know more about the fallopian tubes. These are two tubes on each side of the uterus which assist in moving mature eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. If the egg cannot get through the fallopian tube due to some obstruction, then you have a blocked fallopian tube. This can happen to just one or both your fallopian tubes. The medical term for this is “tubal factor infertility” and currently affects about 40% of all women who are having fertility problems.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes Cause Infertility
Every month a women goes through ovulation. Without you noticing your body is getting ready to have a child, and an egg is being released from your ovaries. While this is happening the egg is slowly traveling from your ovary, through your fallopian tubes, and finally into your uterus. This is a long process and the sperm has to also travel form the cervix, through the women’s uterus and fallopian tubes to reach the egg that has been released. If this all times out correctly, fertilization will occur while both the egg and sperm are traveling through the fallopian tubes.
When the woman’s fallopian tubes are blocked, the sperm cannot reach the egg and the egg cannot reach the sperm.
Hydrosalpinx
This is where your fallopian tubes start to dilate and fill up with fluid because of the blockage. The fluid build-up ends up blocking the egg and sperm from reaching each other and making fertilization impossible to occur, thus preventing pregnancy.
Is Pregnancy Possible with Blocked Fallopian Tubes?
If you only have one blocked fallopian tube, you still have a chance in getting pregnant, but it may be harder and take longer. It just depends on your health, how well your reproductive organs are functioning, and what is causing the blockage in your fallopian tubes.
Symptoms of Blocked Fallopian Tubes
If you have blocked fallopian tubes, there is rarely any sign hinting that you have blocked tubes. With hydrosalpinx, you may have a vaginal discharge, or even some pain in your lower abdomen. However, not everyone will experience these symptoms and some women may not experience any symptoms at all.
